Major Catch-Up - Meowtfits, Moving & More!

Hello Kitten Academicians!

We're behind on the updates, so here's our current plan: we're going to make this one big post that goes over the big updates to help us get caught up quickly. Following this post, we'll introduce you to our newest momcat and her 5 beautiful babies which will have us back to current happenings! After that, we'll be posting as regularly as things happen around the Academy. We thank you very much for your patience and understanding. In appreciation of this, we'll be sprinkling in some photos from the last several months.

Picking up with the Meowtfits

Last we left off, the Meowtfits were pretty new to the Academy. Over the first couple months we got everyone back in good health only to discover that some of the kittens had ringworm. Despite the name, it has nothing to do with worms, which would have been much easier to treat. Ringworm is a common and contagious fungal infection that spreads very easily. After some reading about strong yet cat-safe cleaners, disinfectants and the like, we bought supplies and started routinely disinfecting all the different rooms from top to bottom. There were several points where we thought we’d conquered the ringworm but a short while later we’d find another bald spot on a kitten that indicated the war wasn’t over quite yet. Obviously, with something so contagious, bringing in a new momcat or kittens was simply a bad idea. Even spays and neuters were postponed due to the risk of the active ringworm on their skin spreading internally. This whole situation is what caused the Meowtfits to stay enrolled at the Academy much longer than the average class. Eventually, the several-month-long ringworm battle came to an end and we were victorious! Their spays and neuters were finally able to take place and they were ready for adoption.

Six of the ten Meowtfits were adopted before our move. That meant that Cloak, Romper, Cardigan and Jumper were still present at the Academy. Because the Academy was moving states and it was really unclear about how the laws were laid out, permits or certificates required, etc. all four of the remaining Mewotfits were returned to DAWS for adoption/fostering. After the move and receiving the necessary paperwork, Mr. A drove the 3-4 hours back to Connecticut and wound up bringing Cardigan and Jumper home to the new Academy. Cloak, who hated the car, and Romper, who demonstrated a pretty strong attachment to Cloak, remained at DAWS. Our hope was that they’d be placed with another foster who had time to dedicate to them. More specifically to Cloak who had always been extremely shy and needed help learning to trust.

Slight side note here - We’d like to let you know that DAWS is in need of more fosters! If you are in or around the Bethel, Connecticut area and love kittens as much as we do, please consider becoming a foster. If you think little kittens might be too much work for your circumstances, you could foster older kittens or maybe even adult cats, too. Feel free to reach out to DAWS and let them know you’re interested. We’re sure they’d love to hear from you and they’d be able to give you all the information you need.

Back to the Meowtfits - Jumping forward to today, we're very happy to announce that nine of the ten Meowtfits have found their forever homes! Below is a list of adoptions in the order they took place.

  • Cape & Parka - June 29th

  • Tutu - June 29th

  • Smock - June 29th

  • Blazer - July 4th

  • Poncho (& Noodle) - July 5th

  • Cardigan - August 8th

  • Cloak & Romper - August 25th

Sweet, sweet Jumper is still looking for her forever home!

Jumper is an absolute sweetheart who is slightly timid but loves to snuggle. She prefers people to other cats but could certainly learn to get along with another pet if they are respectful of her space and the introduction is done with care. Her ideal living situation would be in a calm home with humans to snuggle, blankets to nap on and a space at your desk to keep an eye on the progress of your work. Currently, Jumper is located at the new Academy (more on this later!) in Pennsylvania. That said, given the unique nature of this situation, Mr. A would be willing to drive her back to DAWS in Connecticut (where all of her endowments are also located) if the approved adopter would prefer to meet there for pickup.

Autumn is around the corner, do you need a Jumper? Click HERE to submit an application!

The enrollment & graduation of Noodle

Back in February, Noodle came to us on a transport as a potential momcat from Georgia. Right away we were skeptical about her being pregnant and, as it turns out, we were right. Despite her pregnot status, she enjoyed a few months of enrollment at the Academy getting routine vet care, advanced floof maintenance classes and later getting adopted with Poncho in early July.

A brand new campus for the Academy

The Academy has moved! DJ graduated from her specialization fellowship earlier this year and got a wonderful job at a great health network in Pennsylvania. Once the job was secured, the campus search was on. Months of researching, must-have considerations, viewings and seller negotiations later, the new campus was secured. Over time we’ll be making some changes to better suit the Academy but as it stands now, it’s a lovely hillside property with a lot of built-in character, fun history and oh so many windows.

During the second week of July, the Connecticut campus was packed up and moved to Pennsylvania along with Mr. A, DJ & the Faculty. For those of you who have been following us for awhile, you may remember our move from Illinois to Connecticut. As the faculty adjusted, dynamics shifted. Well, it's happened again. Custard and Loganberry, who have previously required constant separation, are now getting along again and we even have pictures to prove it!

Given the change of location, Mr. A started looking for a new, local shelter to work with. Sadly, none of the shelters that were contacted meshed well with how the Academy is accustomed to running. As we touched upon earlier, we learned that work could continue with DAWS so long as we provided our approved Pennsylvania foster certificate. What's even cooler? The transport that they use, the same one we've gotten several momcats and kittens from in the past, comes right through our new area!

Well, the shelter was sorted but what about a vet, you may ask. When it comes to routine vet visits, we'll be trying different places in the area until we find what feels right for us. Though we're hoping we don't need one anytime soon, we were lucky enough to get a direct recommendation from Teaspoon's surgeon for an emergency vet in our area. Again, not something we hope to need anytime in the near future but it's definitely an important marker on our map should the need arise.

Following that last point, we have a sad update to share that admittedly is long overdue but we simply couldn't bring ourselves to compose it any sooner. Click the button below if and when you are ready.

All moves come with a bit of an adjustment period and this move has been no different. We’re still getting settled, unpacking, setting up what will hopefully be a smoother stream for youtube and really just getting the Academy back to what you all know it to be.

Once again, we appreciate your patience and we’re excited to bring you all along for this new chapter of Kitten Academy - Pennsylvania. The first class has already enrolled and they’re doing great. Head over here to read all about them!

Hold Onto Your Hats! News, Updates & Photos!

Hello, Kitten Academicians!

We come to you today with news, updates, adoptions and photoshoot pictures to share!

Gadget’s Gearbox

First, we have unfortunate news to share about Crank. When you're ready, click the button below to read our facts-only update.

We hope that's the last time for a long time that we have to share sad news.

Gadget was adopted on November 3rd by Sham & Gambit’s family! We do miss her silliness here at the Academy but we know she’s continued her shenanigans at her new home and with her new buddies, too!

A Hat trick!

Moving to more pawsitive news, we've had a hat trick! Fez went home on December 1st to his new family and seems to be settling in very nicely. On the 6th, Stetson & Hazelnut started their journey home together and have done well so far! We are already receiving updates about their adventures on our discord!

So that’s three Hats adopted, two Hats to go!

Bonnet

Bonnet enjoys a good cuddle and will let you know with her approving purrs! She baffles scientists with her ability to take up an immense amount of space despite her physical size.

Derby

Derby has opinions and wants to make sure you know them! Just as much as he loves a good debate, he also loves to plop down and snuggle right next to you while he purrs.

Both Bonnet and Derby are food motivated and, due to that, potentially easy to train if that’s something you’re interested in trying. They both love to birdwatch & still have endless kitten energy. They’d be a great pair if you’re interested in two kittens but they can absolutely be adopted individually as well. Their endowments are sorted and they’re ready to go home as soon as they have an approved adopter or adopters! If you’d like to submit an application for one or both of these sweethearts, click the button below!

As for a new momcat, DAWS knows we’re ready and they’re looking but we haven’t heard anything just yet. We aren’t in a giant hurry but we’re ready as soon as we get the call that they’ve got a momcat in need! We’ll keep you informed!

Now, on to the photoshoot pictures you’ve probably been waiting for!

Hazelnut's Hats + Lots of Updates!

Greetings, Kitten Academicians!

We’ve got a lot of news to get through so let’s get to it!

Cashmere

Super high on the list of exciting things to share is that Cashmere of Cuddles’ Snugglers has found an adopter! Better yet, he’s going home with someone already on our discord, so we’re excited to be able to keep up with him. The expected adoption date is September 2nd. We’re gonna miss this handsome guy.

Cashmere

Hazelnut’s Hats

Another exciting announcement is, of course, Hazelnut’s Hats! Late on the 6th of August and into the morning of the 7th, Hazelnut gave birth to four beautiful and healthy kittens. She’s very clearly an experienced mom and has taken wonderful care of herself and her family so far. After the last few classes that required a bit more hands-on care for one reason or another, this class has been an absolute treat to have at the Academy. Great gains, sweetheart mom, hardly any bad poops, clean and tidy, adorable—the list goes on.

We don’t have pictures quite yet of these tinies but rest assured, it’s on the to-do list. We wont make any promises but there’s hope that we may get around to a real photoshoot with this class soon. For now, here’s a cheatsheet with their names! Bonnet being the only girl.

Cheatsheet made by is.a.momo on our Discord

Crank Update

While what we do know from vet appointments and the internist she saw is positive news, we don’t really have any specific answers as to what may be going on with little Crank. There’s the potential that whatever is causing her digestive issues may be something she’s able to grow out of as it has been slowly improving over time. We’ve gone ahead and scheduled her spay on September 9th with the same surgeon who did Teaspoon’s neuter awhile back. While she’s sedated they’ll do a little investigating and see what they can find. In the meantime, she’s doing okay with the lactulose and receiving enemas as needed. We’ll update again when we know more. Here you have a few Crank photos and a bonus Teaspoon!

Teaspoon Update

Tuesday, the 27th, Teaspoon had a follow-up appointment at the cardiologist. Basically, his heart valve issue is more or less stable and his body is compensating well enough to continue as is. The risks of the procedure he may eventually need greatly outweigh the benefits at this point, so we’re happy to wait. The plan for now is to continue him on his heart medication and have another follow-up in about one year.

Directly after his cardiology appointment he met with our vet, Dr. Katz, regarding his ongoing constipation issues. She decided it would be best to give him an enema to clean him out and bump his lactulose dose up just a bit. She also suggested a high-fiber diet which we will be looking into as well.

Teaspoon and Cash being unbearably cute

Gadget Update

On the 13th of August, Gadget got her spay without any issues. We thought maybe it might calm her down but so far there’s been no sign of her slowing down, not even a little bit! She has been enjoying supervised exploration around the house and some arranged trial playdates with Custard. Her style of communication is a little misunderstood by the rest of the cats but we really do think she’s just got a lot of energy and wants to be playful despite not communicating with the others clearly.

If you’ve made it this far, well done! We know this was a lot to get through. As a bonus, here are a couple photos of Gadget and Crank out in the stroller with DJ. Gadget found it interesting, Crank, not so much.

We’ll be back when we have more to share, thanks for reading!

Repost: The Adorable Adootables!

Greetings, Kitten Academicians! We are re-publishing this post to remind everyone of the adorable kittens still available for adoption. Since the original post, Raindrop does have an approved adooter!

The Adootables!

Let’s start right here; forget anything you think you know about these kittens!  Okay, not everything, but the time they’ve spent at KA has seen them all through many changes.  So if you’ve heard us say things in the closeups like “I think so-and-so would love being adopted with so-and-so” keep in mind these things can change pretty quickly – and easily – at this young age.

All the cats and kittens we’re discussing here are ready to go and as always, you can adopt from anywhere in the continental USA, but you have to pick them up from Monroe, CT, in person.  If you have any trouble with the application, please let us know.

The Tabby Sisters

Raindrop, Sprout, and Drizzle are sleek and lovely mackerel tabbies who are very well-adjusted and love play and snuggles with humans as you’d expect from KA graduates.  They came to the Academy as the “April Meowers” and their mom and other siblings have already gone to their adopters.  They have lovely satin fur and play responsibly – you can pet that belly!  All three of them get along just great with the other adootables and any pairings would be great choices.

Of the three, Raindrop is the most attention-seeking, both from cats and people, and tends to be the quickest to get along with new cats and new situations.  She does have a fixation on fingers and wants to help you type by biting on them, but is very gentle about it.

Raindrop

Sprout

Sprout is a free spirit who can’t be collared – literally!  Even when the sisters got their sparkly new collars, Sprout rejected hers quickly.  She’s independent and of the three, probably would best tolerate time alone while her human is at work.

Drizzle is the most conservative, and can be quite growly at new kittens initially, but learns to get over it in due time.  Drizzle jealously guards her favorite toys and loves to play fetch – if she brings you a toy, try throwing it, but make sure she’s watching where it goes (or use a toy that makes noise)!

Drizzle

All three tolerate endless snuggles from their humans and being held like babies, as long as they’re getting petted in the bargain.

The DLC

Squall & Wellingtons

When Dr. Katz at Aristokatz discovered a litter of newborn kittens on her doorstep, she offered to let us care for them.  A late addition to the April Meowers, these Darling Little Cats had a bit of a rough start but have grown into the fuzzy marshmallows they are today. Circumstances saw them hand-raised by Mr. A and their attachment to humans is particularly strong as a result.  We’re pleased to announce that Wellingtons and his sister Squall have both (mostly) outgrown their need to lick noses, just as their tongues are becoming extremely abrasive.  They still cannot get enough snuggling and carrying and prefer to sleep near – or on – their human’s heads.  They aren’t particularly fond of other cats – they’re well bonded with all the current Academy residents and other adootables, but very skeptical when meeting new cats and kittens and take a little convincing to come around.

Wellingtons has become a “typical teenage boy” who is extra rambunctious and lately his waking hours are spent almost entirely focused on roughhousing with his sister, the Tabby twins, or anyone else he can.  He reminds us of teenage Tommy, or Custard, and like them is likely to grow out of it – mostly – in a few years.

Wellingtons

Squall

Squall is much more focused on human affection and there’s never enough.  She and her brother both will need humans with lots of time and affection to give, but Squall more so.  She’s a little quicker to come around to new cats than her brother is, but still a bit wary.

Serenity Now!

Serenity

Serenity arrived at the Academy a momcat and a kitten herself.  While she didn’t become a momcat in the end, she is still a playful kitten!  Serenity is quite shy but also energetic like a kitten, and loves human affection.  She’s a wonderful bundle of contradictions – a cat.  We find she can be hand shy and especially wary of people standing over her, but if you are on her level and patient, she will reward you with endless affection and play.  It took Mr. A some effort to get her to come around, and the resulting snuggles are all the more enjoyable for it.  He still can have a hard time catching her when it’s time to go to her room – and of course she’s well-known for being an escape artist capable of operating door handles to let herself out again.  As a kitten, she has a lot of energy to work out, and zooms and wrestles with the other adootables all the time. While she did learn to get along with all of the kittens at the Academy after a normal adjustment period, we notice that she really appreciates having her own space, too. We think she will be very happy in a home that has a more normal human-to-cat ratio.

Lastly, here are some bonus photos of everyone mentioned above, some more recent than others.

The Adorable Adootables!

Greetings, Kitten Academicians!

It’s been a while, but we’re here with plenty of good news!  The most important stuff is all about the cats and kittens that are ready to be adopted, but before that, let us take one moment.

We’ve been working on better communication and so we’ve started putting things in place to bring in some extra help.  I only bring it up to mention you may see some really positive changes in the coming days and weeks.  Thank you so much to the wonderful people who have volunteered – and I know many more of you have offered help in the past.  Once we sort things out a little, we’ll be greatly expanding the program.  We’re super excited to share it all with you, but first things first!

Port Oranges and Catterns Updates!

Greetings, Kitten Academicians!

As you no doubt are aware, Port Oranges have been getting picked up by their adopters and as of this writing, only Bombay, Rotterdam, and Sydney remain. And Millet, of course. They will be picked up in due time:

  • Bombay - Friday July 9th

  • Syd and Millet - Saturday July 17th

  • Rotterdam - TBD, after neuter on the 12th

We would have liked to have done another studio photoshoot with the entire group but unfortunately, time did not allow. We did, however, catch a bunch of action shots with the oranges and the A-Door-Able bird toy. You’ll find some of those at the end of this post!

Meanwhile, we managed another brief shoot with the Catterns. We’ll split that up by kitten here as it’s still difficult to tell Chevron from Herringbone. The Catterns are finally eating well on their own and all seem very active and happy! There’s good evidence that the Calicivirus that Rotterdam had earlier has been picked up by some or all of the Catterns but they seem — like Rotterdam — as though they don’t even notice.

Hipster Weebops Graduation!

Greetings, Kitten Academicians!

It seems like just yesterday that Bebop spent twelve whole hours bringing her seven kittens into the world, but they’re now three months old, and have completed their studies at the Academy! We have the adoptions all scheduled, except for Artie, who’s spending a little extra time here to have his kidneys checked out on Tuesday.

  • Indie and Retro - September 20

  • Ironic and Vintage - September 20

  • Vinyl - September 25

  • Bespoke and Bebop - September 26

  • Artie - ????

Somehow Tilbury’s kittens have reached a week old and we still haven’t published their first photoshoot - so we’ll make that up to all of you with additional photos in due time! Meanwhile…

Updates and Song's Quintet Photos!

Two Mewspaper posts in one day is unprecedented, but it's been a special day!

Latte is a very serious cat.

Yesterday, the adopter of Star and Mocha also adopted Latte, and when he was reintroduced to his mom and brother, they filmed it!  What a wonderful outcome after all the potential adoptions for Latte that fell through!

We've brought this up on the stream a number of times, but it bears repeating - DJ's big exams for medical school are coming up fast now, with less than a month left to study.  She's therefore had understandably little time to help out with Kitten Academy duties the way she normally does.  In turn, Mr. A. has been struggling to keep up with the usual activity.  Naturally, we see to the kittens' needs first, so if something has to fall by the wayside, it's likely to be videos and communication on social media and the Discord chat.

Eddie/Toonki enjoys a rest.

If you're one of our Patreon supporters, -- thank you! -- the month ends tonight, and we haven't had our monthly Patreon stream, for the first time since we started.  We'll also be sending out the paw print cards a little late -- not the first time that's happened.

After the exams are completed, DJ and Mr. A. will be leaving for two weeks of vacation.  During that time, Kitten Academy will be managed by JimmyD and JenniD, whom you may remember as the adopters of Winnie and Gary of the Fonts.  The live stream will carry on as usual, under their care.  We're super excited to have "guest hosts" and we couldn't ask for better substitutes -- you may not want Mr. A. and DJ to return!  The plan is to help them have an easier time of it by only having Song and her kittens at that time - so our next momcat or kittens will not be arriving until after our return in mid-June.

After that, we hope things at the Academy will return to normal!  Thanks for bearing with us during this tumultuous time!

Now on to the real point of this Mewspaper entry... photos!

Coffee Cats Graduation!

Java was pretty excited to go to his adopter early.

This is our post to share the graduation photos of the Coffee Cats, but there's an abnormal amount of mews we'd like to relate ahead of that.  Please feel free to scroll through if you're only here for the photos!

We all knew the Coffee Cats were latecomers who wouldn't be here long - but we certainly didn't expect to fall in love as quickly as we have!  As you know, they came here from some other On Angels' Wings fosters, who couldn't keep them until they were fully ready to adopt.  They sure did a great job of getting them off to a wonderful start, though - they're fantastic kittens!  And there's no doubt in our minds that their mom, Star, is the finest momcat we've had to date.

Secret Agent Momcat Star is always prepared for the next mission!

Even better news; all the Coffee Cats have at least potential adopters!  Star and Mocha will be adopted together, on Saturday, and at the moment, we're told that Caramel will be picked up this weekend as well.  Latte, Bean, and Frappe will probably return to the Academy for the week, and meet their adopters next weekend.

The plan here at the Academy is to move Angel and her Fish to the main room on Saturday, then whichever Coffee Cats remain will have the Annex as their homebase - but be generally allowed access to the entire Academy grounds.  They'll likely only be confined to the Annex at night.

Please note that due to timing issues, this weekend's mailbag segment has been moved to Sunday, at the usual time: 10:00 KATZ.  As always, if you can't join us live for the segment, it will be on YouTube for later viewing.

We're told that Arial has an approved adopter, but that Velvet is still at On Angels' Wings, waiting for the right applicant.  Momcats at OAW get to roam the thrift store and we're told Velvet is having a good time with her new friends.  Nonetheless, if you have any intention of adopting any Kitten Academy momcat or kitten now or ever, put in your application today!

Velvet judges your apparel selection at the OAW store!

We would like to take an extra moment, and thank all of you for making Kitten Academy a huge success!

We're very near our one-year anniversary (depending on how you measure, it's roughly March 20th [Hazel's arrival], April 20th [Start of the Livestream], or May 20th [Creation of kitten.academy]).

Our primary goal has been to help get Academy graduates adopted, and we think we can say that goal is achieved -- and how!  Some of the Fish had adopters within days of being born!  You are wonderful - but we frankly cannot tell you how wonderful.  There are no words -  this is unprecedented.  We think, not only for us -- but also worldwide.  If anyone knows of a more successful adoption of fostered kittens rescued from local shelters, we'd love to know about it (and what they did right!)

Of course, that's not our only goal anymore.  We aim to help get ALL kittens everywhere adopted, and also to help with care and feeding of cats and kittens that might not otherwise get the best of everything.  With your help we've made amazing progress on those goals as well.  We talked about this a little in our most recent Patreon live stream, but we'll be sure to cover it in more depth in a mewspaper article, soon!

Fish Photo Shoot!

Hello, Kitten Academicians!

We don't need no education!

We've got some photos of the Fish and Angel for you -- some from two weeks ago, and some from last night.  I bet you can tell which are which!

Before that, though, a moment of news:  Java was picked up at On Angels' Wings today by his adopter.  As he's left the academy before graduation, he's officially our first "drop out!"  A lot of famous people have dropped out and still managed great things, so we hope for the best.  But we'd encourage all of you to stay in school nonetheless!  Don't be a Java!

His adopter will be returning to OAW with him when he's ready to be fixed, so that will be taken care of.  Unfortunately, this adoption was arranged before he came to the Kitten Academy, so it's uncertain whether we'll be able to expect any updates later.

Star's doing very well in her recovery, and we're hopeful that soon we'll feel comfortable letting her spend as much time as she likes with her kittens.  We'd also like to offer her the option of roaming the Academy grounds with the Faculty cats, but we're cautious about introducing too many new and exciting situations while she's convalescing.

So, that's all the important news - let's get to the photos!
