Adopt a Brook!

Greetings, Kitten Academicians!

If any of you were waiting for official word on Brook’s health before putting in an adoption application, now’s the time! She’s got a clean bill of health, and is strong as an ox! (A very small ox.)

That’s one photogenic cat!

This beautiful momcat was first noticed by us in October while we were at AristoKatz vet in Fairfield. We immediately fell in love with her and her little Pebble kitten, and after some discussion between DAWS, TAILS, and Dr. Katz, we got permission to take Brook and Pebble on at the Academy!

It wasn’t long after Pebble was weaned that Brook encouraged her to join the rowdy boys Fern, Thistle, and Moss, leaving Brook free to pursue her own interests. Brook moved herself into the Academy’s guest bedroom and she continues to claim it as her personal space.

Repeated super high blood sugar tests at the vet led us to believe that she may be diabetic, but on further testing, we discovered that her blood sugar was only high at the vet - or after a car ride. A final fructosamine test at the vet proved that her blood sugar is typically quite normal, and the high tests were only due to stress.

Although Brook is somewhat stressed out by change and slow to accept new cats and new places, she does come around after a time. After three months of slowly acclimatizing her to the faculty here at the Academy, she now gets along with them all acceptably well. There’s still the occasional scuffle, but nothing more frequent or serious than what we see between Custard and Loganberry, or Loganberry and Eddie — normal cat behavior.

More Treats, Please!

She likes infrequent wild play with her toys, bouncing off the walls and running around like a kitten. More typically, she likes to snuggle up in a bed near her favorite humans and nap. She absolutely loves treats and will do anything you ask if there’s a food-based reward involved. She’s smart and easy to train.

She’s very tolerant of being picked up, snuggled, cuddled like a baby, or held in a lap and petted — especially if there are treats involved — but she tends to prefer to go lie down on her own if the petting stops.

She’d make an excellent choice for a single-cat household, or could be introduced to a multi-cat household over a period of time. You’d certainly want her to have her own safe space for the first months — just as you should when introducing any new cat to an existing group.

You can use this form to apply to adopt Brook via DAWS. As always, Kitten Academy cats and kittens can be adopted anywhere within the continental United States, but you do have to come pick her up in person (and visit the Academy)!

Greetings, Kitten Academicians!

Quick updates:

Brook’s blood sugar has been in a normal range two days in a row, though it’s a bit early to claim she’s in remission, it’s possible that she could be adopted and not need daily insulin after all. We’ll continue to monitor the situation and you can follow along in our daily morning videos!

Bell’s X-ray clearly shows two kittens and perhaps unclearly shows more than that. We’ve scheduled another for Tuesday the 28th, the same day that Pebble will be in for her graduation surgery/final exam.

Pebble and Culotte will be picked up by their adopter on the 31st. We’ll be sad to see them go, but we’re thrilled that they’ve found a great home!

Though things may be slow at the Academy while we wait for Bell to deliver, we’ll do our best to keep some kind of entertainment on the live stream!

Here’s the photos of the faculty that interrupted the Tinyplants graduation shoot the other day:

Graduation for the Babbles!

Greetings, Kitten Academicians!

Our latest class is just about to head to their homes! We apologize for the lack of a proper graduation photoshoot for the Tinypants. We’re not sure how that got missed! But hopefully the nearly 200 photos of Brook, Pebble, Moss, Fern, Thistle, and Culotte will help make up for that somewhat.

Currently, the adoption plans are for Moss, Fern, and Thistle to be picked up by their adopter - they’re all going together - on Saturday the 18th at about 2pm. There’s a big snowstorm due in the area that might require us to change the timing somewhat.

Culotte and Pebble are scheduled to go home together on Friday 31st! Until then, they will likely be given free run of the house, rather than staying in the main Academy classroom. Pebble’s graduation surgery (final exam?) is scheduled for the 28th.

Raise your hand if you’re beautiful and need an adopter!

Brook, of course, still needs an adopter!

We’ll likely have an unusual number of blog posts here in the next day or three since we have a pending art post to follow-up on the Inktober challenges that Syl set up on Twitter, a new momcat to introduce and a new Januarty challenge ongoing now, too. But we’ll save those for the next posts - for now, just enjoy the photos!

Merry Christmas!

Season’s Greetings, Kitten Academicians!

Not much to share here, but we didn’t want to let Christmas go by without posting the remnants of our Christmas photoshoot. We’ll also be posting the archive of the Santa visit … uh, eventually?

Also, just a quick reminder, Tailor and Brook still need adopters! We’ll post more about that soon.

Tinypants and Momcats!

Greetings, Kitten Academicians!

Our annual-if-we-can-ual Halloween shoot didn’t go as expected this year - we cut it short due to camera malfunction. But we have several photos of the Tinypants from before the costumes came out and the camera quit.

But before we get to that, all the kitten news!

We have approved adopters for almost all the kittens! Culotte and Pebble are being adopted together. Fern, Moss, and Thistle are being adopted as a group! And Knickerbocker also has an approved adopter. The Tinypants will probably graduate in about a month, and the younger kids may take a bit more than two months.

Meanwhile, we still need to find homes for Brook, Tailor, and Blue Jean!

Brook “Sugar Brookie”

Brook is Pebble’s mom, and she’s super loving towards her humans. Don’t let her intense eyes fool you - she is the queen of the slow blink, which is cat for “I love you!” She also enjoys when we put her on our laps and snuggle, even if we want to hold her upside-down like a kitten. We know that in her past, she lived with a bunch of other cats, and while her reactions towards the faculty haven’t yet been super friendly, they also aren’t aggressive. So we think that if she found a patient adopter with other cats, she could be introduced to them slowly. Or she’d fit right in as an only cat! She also has exotic good looks with her tufted ears, dark colors, and colored muzzle.

Tailor

Tailor is Blue Jean’s mom and they’d make a great pair together. If you’ve watched the Kitten Academy Live Stream much, you’ve probably seen the two of them playing and wrestling like kittens. Blue Jean is certainly the most playful and bold of Tailor’s three kittens - she was the first to meet the faculty and usually the first to check out new toys and new situations. If she gets adopted with her mom, they can keep each other entertained pretty well - and if they are adopted separately, their adopters should be prepared to spend some time every day wearing them down! Tailor has some of the softest fur we’ve ever had at the Academy, and uniquely colored classic tabby sworls.

Blue Jean

Please apply to adopt Brook, Blue Jean, and Tailor! Or if you know anyone who might, send them here to apply! All adoptions are managed by DAWS and we’re willing to adopt to anywhere in the continental USA, as long as you’re willing to come to southwestern Connecticut to pick them up.

Here’s all the photos we’ve taken lately!

Welcome to Brook's Babbles!

Greetings, Kitten Academicians!

We’ve got photos lined up in advance for another blog post tomorrow, so we’re going to save news and updates about the Tinypants for then. This post is just about the new kittens!

Three kittens showed up unexpectedly at DAWS, and they knew we were looking for some siblings for Pebble, so they asked us to take them in and add them to Brook’s class. Unfortunately, Brook has decided she’s done with kittens - seemingly even done with Pebble — so we’ve taken the kittens to the “second annex.” Pebble is getting along great with her new brothers!

Meanwhile, Brook is scheduled for her spay on Thursday and would be ready to go home with the right adopter shortly thereafter! She’s sweet, playful, and very pretty! So far, she’s not too happy about other cats, though that may change once she’s had her surgery. And she’s not aggressive, so we’re fairly confident she could be with other cats after a patient and extended introduction. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as we introduce her to the faculty while she’s here.

Welcome to Brook and Pebble!

Greetings, Kitten Academicians!

DJ’s cheat sheet is simpler and more complex than usual!

You’ve probably already noticed the latest attendees of the Academy, Brook and Pebble. Our new vet, Dr. Katz, was looking after them for T.A.I.L.S, who had rescued them recently. T.A.I.L.S. were looking for a foster and we fell in love with Brook and her kitten at first sight, so we offered to take them if no foster could be found - and if they’d be willing to sign them over to DAWS, the shelter we normally work with.

Of course, as soon as we offered, the fine folks at T.A.I.L.S. agreed to sign them over and have them put through the Kitten Academy! This is the first time we’ve had a class with just one kitten in it - it’s possible if not likely that we’ll ask DAWS if they want to add in more classmates later in the semester.

We would really love to see Brook and Pebble adopted together, and hope some of you consider applying for them as a pair. It’s never too early to put in an application!

On that note, we’d love to see the Tinypants adopted in groups as well, with their mom, Tailor! They’ve got approximately a month and a half left until graduation now, so it’s a great time to apply!

Finally, Twist is the only one of the Wiggles still at the Academy, and we expect her adopter to pick her up on October 23rd. She’ll be going home all the way to Arizona!

Here’s our first photoshoot with Brook and Pebble, and some bonus faculty photos and Whimsy too!
